Ma’a’gal Ki’nah / Grief Ritual for Tisha b'Av 5783

July 26th 2023, 7:30pm-9:30pm ET, online.

9 (Tisha) b’Av is one of the grief-tending technologies that the Jewish tradition offers all peoples of the world.

It is a day (the ninth in the month of Av) of fast in the Hebrew Calendar that marks historic moments of brokenness, dedicated to the book of lamentations; it marks the beginning of the holiday season including Rosh Hashana through Sukkot, and most importantly, bringing light to the cycle of dissolution and emergence, concealment of self & form and the revelation of mystery; a time to inquire into the nature of this self, all that seems solid, and into the grief that makes all seem impenetrable & insurmountable, the nuance of shame, outrage, love and yearning that live in the ruins of these temples. This grief is felt personally, and is shared, collectively. Ultimately, I believe, there is only one grief, and only one temple. Repeatedly concealed. Repeatedly revealed.

This ritual will include intention-setting, ancestors-gathering, prayer, chanting, embodiment, meditation, and opportunity for sharing and listening; to touch this collective grief-entity, care for it, let it release its ripples and waters, and step through its doorway into the radiance of Not Knowing. All identities and backgrounds are welcome; feel welcome to register in this link, and to forward to anyone onward.
